Help Your Child Resist Peer Pressure

Kids need to fit in. But they also need to know that there are times when they can't go along with what "everybody else" is doing. Teach your child some ways to say no to things that are unsafe, illegal or against the school's or your family's rules.

For example, your child can:

• Say no. "No. I know it's wrong to do that."
• Make an excuse. "I have to do some chores at home."
• Change the subject. "Could you believe how hard that history test was?"
• Offer a better idea. "Why don't we ride bikes instead?"
• Blame you. "My folks would ground me forever if I did that."

If you think your child’s friends are encouraging dangerous behavior in school, let the teacher know. Outside of school, allow your child to spend time with those friends only under your supervision.
