Students Do Better When Families Get Involved
Many students’ families believe they're too busy to get involved at school. But engagement doesn't have to take a lot of time. And any involvement on your part can make a big difference to your teen.
Here are some ideas to consider:
- Tour the school. This will give you a better understanding of what your teen is talking about when you discuss school activities.
- Volunteer. There are many things families can do to benefit all students at the school. You might help with a club or activity, for example, or chaperone or sell tickets for a school event. You can also volunteer to do tasks at home.
- Attend school events, whenever possible, especially those involving your teen. It will mean a lot to your student and the school.
- Attend workshops for families that are held by the school. These might be in person or online. Or offer to help plan one on a topic that interests you.
- Keep in touch with teachers. Ask them how you can help your teen learn at home. Tell them about any big changes in your student's life.
- Join parent-teacher organizations or parent advisory groups.
