Restock Your Teen's 'Toolbox' of Life Skills
A mechanic would never work on a car without a good set of tools. Don't send your teen into the world without a "toolbox" of life skills. The summer months are a great time to focus on important skills such as:
- Responsibility. Give your teen control over one or two areas of his life this summer. If he hasn't had experience managing finances, for example, help him create and stick to a budget. If he will be earning money, help him set up a checking and savings account.
- Autonomy. Some kids come home from college with a month's worth of laundry. Before your teen leaves home, be sure he knows how to care for his clothes. Also teach him to prepare simple meals.
- Focus. Your 17-year-old may not know what he wants to do as an adult. But a summer job (even if it's unpaid) can help him figure it out.
