How does your family celebrate birthdays? What do you do when someone in the family has accomplished something? How do you support each other when things aren't going well?
Family rituals can be part of the glue that holds families together. Ask your teen to help you develop some simple family rituals to celebrate your own important family events.
These rituals don’t need to be elaborate. For example, at the end of this month your family might celebrate New Year’s Eve by talking about New Year’s resolutions.
Use rituals to spend more time with your teen. For example, if you aren’t in the habit of going out for breakfast—just you and your teen—make time to do it this month. If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get in shape, see if there’s a way you and your teen can set up exercise time together.
If your rituals can involve spending time outdoors, so much the better. Teens spend so much of their time focused entirely on themselves that they need to remember there’s a great big world around them. Perhaps you could go ice skating on a frozen pond or take a hike on a nearby nature trail. Your teen will learn that family ties matter everywhere.
