Self-Talk Helps Stressed Teens Calm Down

Your teen is about to step up to the free throw line. Or is preparing to take a penalty kick. Sports are filled with high pressure situations.

In these moments, professional athletes often use self-talk to calm themselves down. The same strategy works for students. Encourage your teen to say things like, "I've practiced this hundreds of times. I know how to do it," then to breathe deeply and focus on the job at hand.

These techniques don't just help on the field. Suggest your teen use them in the classroom, too.
