Ask Your Child for an 'Evening News Report'

Does your child draw a blank when you ask, "What happened in school today?" When it comes to school, no news is not good news. You need to know as much as possible about your child's experiences in school.

To encourage your child to remember and relate school events, ask for an "evening news report." To prepare it, your child should make a list of a few things that happened during the day. A good time to do this is right after school, while things are still fresh in your child’s mind.

Ask your elementary schooler to provide balanced coverage. Explain that this means reporting on what made your child happy and what was challenging. Then, over dinner, have your student give this very special news report.
