Nurture Your Child's Social Confidence

Swooping in and saving children from social challenges doesn't help them learn to navigate them.

To strengthen your elementary schooler's social skills:

  1. Listen when your child tells you about a problem. Ask questions like "What did you do next?" This makes it clear that your child can act to affect the outcome of social situations.
  2. Encourage your child to speak up for needs, wants and ideas. Have your student to make a case when asking for items or privileges. Have a few family debate nights.
