Solving Sample Problems Reinforces Science Concepts

Solving sample problems is a great way for students to figure out what they know and don't know, and to reinforce problem-solving steps.

Suppose your teen is about to tackle some chemistry problems. Encourage your student to look in class notes to find a similar problem that the teacher solved in class. Then your teen can copy it onto a fresh sheet of paper and put away the notes.

Can your teen solve the problem independently? Probably not. And believe it or not, that’s not bad news. Because now your teen will have to work through the sample problem again. Your student may need to check the notes or read an explanation in a textbook. In doing so, your teen will learn what steps to follow and why, and will be ready to go on to the other problems.

Over time, your teen will see how one day’s learning builds on the material learned the day before. And that will lead to success.
