Encourage Civic Responsibility
In a democratic society, people have many rights ... but they also have responsibilities. Encourage your child to take these responsibilities seriously, at home, in school and in the community.
To encourage civic responsibility:
- Set a good example. Take an active role in your community. Attend a meeting of the parent-teacher organization at school, the city council or school board. Take your child with you.
- Expect your child to do age-appropriate chores for the good of the family. Help your elementary schooler see that when everyone contributes, everyone benefits.
- Take part in community service projects as a family. Clean up a nearby park. Help children with disabilities enjoy a sport. Or, choose another activity your family can do together to make your community a better place.
