Help Your Child to Learn to Be Patient

In order to function well in classes with others, children need to learn self-control. They must take turns asking questions or getting attention from the teacher. This involves patience.

Discuss the signs of impatience in your child’s behavior—tapping a foot, tightening and tensing of muscles, talking louder and faster, being critical of others, and making comments such as “Come on. This is taking forever!” Help your child recognize the signs for what they are.

Next, teach your child some self-talk to use when one of these things happens. Your child can say things like, “Stay calm,” “I’m going to be patient,” and “Getting upset isn’t going to help anything.”
