Beginning readers often lose their place on a page they are reading. To keep on track, they may use their fingers to point to each word. Sometimes, however, this can lead to choppy and disconnected reading.
If this sounds like your child, get out a straight-edged bookmark. Have your child put it horizontally under the line of text. This helps students learn to scan the entire line instead of reading word by word. Don't worry about the bookmark becoming a crutch, says one veteran teacher. When it is no longer needed, your child will set it aside. Taking away the bookmark too soon won't help.
