Be Your Teen's 'Study Buddy'
It can help students to have a "study buddy"—someone to collaborate with as they do their work. Sometimes a buddy can be a classmate. But adults at home also make good study buddies.
To be an effective study buddy:
- Help your teen find sources and organize information for a report or quiz.
- Show your teen how to break larger tasks down into smaller parts.
- Help your student recognize key ideas in books.
- Make up questions that might be on a test, and take turns answering them.
- Use flashcards to help your teen practice spelling or math, or memorize history or other facts.
- Listen as your teen practices a presentation.
- Make sure your teen understands assignment instructions.
- Offer encouragement by complimenting effort and small improvements.
