Keep Reading With Your Teen
As children grow older, families tend to read with them less. But it’s important for older students to keep reading and building literacy skills at home.
Here are some reading-related activities you can do with your teen:
- Read at bedtime. You can each read your own books or your teen can read to you. You can even take turns reading pages. It’s a great way to relax at night.
- Play word games. Crossword puzzles and board games, such as Scrabble and Boggle, all develop word skills. Plugged-in teens may prefer online games, such as Wordle and Wrodeo.
- Share articles of interest. When you read something you think your teen might enjoy, read some of it aloud to pique your student’s interest. Then, hand over a copy so your teen can read the rest.
- Take advantage of the library. This is a great way to make sure that your home is always stocked with new and interesting things to read. Pay regular visits with your teen, and check out a new section each time.
- Write. Give your teen pencils, pens and paper for writing stories, notes and letters. Let your teen see you writing, too.
