Help Your Teen Make a Difference

Teens are often focused on their own wants and needs. Doing things for other people can help them understand that it is also important to consider the needs of others.

Help your teen find ways to benefit the community and its people. Could your student organize or participate in a community art project or help clean up a park? Suggest that your teen think about the needs of people in your neighborhood. Are there people without computers who could use help signing up online for a service or appointment? Perhaps your teen could volunteer. Are there local issues your student feels strongly about? Encourage your teen to find out about ways to help organizations that are working on solving them.

When teens work for the benefit of others, they also develop a better understanding of their own value to the world at large.
