Use Magazines to Motivate Your Child to Read

Magazine articles are great for motivating children to read. The pictures and captions hold young readers' interest and give them plenty of opportunities to be successful.

Here are some ways to help students get the most from magazines:

• Look for publications—in print or online—with articles about your child's interests.
• Ask your child to read an article aloud to you while you prepare a meal.
• Encourage your child to submit a poem, riddle or story to a children's magazine. It might get published!
• Have your child cut out pictures from magazines and use them to create a rebus (a story that replaces some words with pictures).

A magazine subscription gives your child something to look forward to receiving in the mail. But you can also find children's magazines online and at the library.
