Three Things Help Your Child Start the Year Strong
Schools and families are preparing for the new school year. Some students will be a little nervous. If this is true of your child, be reassuring. Say that you know your child is up to the challenge of new situations.
Then, to support success, help your child start school with:
- Concentration. Block out time each day for quiet reading or study. Keep this time as distraction free as possible. Have everyone in the family read or do quiet work.
- Organization. Each evening, help your child create a checklist of items needed for school the next day: schoolwork, books, supplies, etc. Designate a box or shelf as a place for your child to collect the items so they are ready to go in the morning. Help your child use a calendar to keep track of activities and commitments.
- Motivation. How can you encourage your child's best efforts? Set aside time each day to talk together about school. Look for ways your child can show you new skills or concepts. And say often that your child's education matters to you.
