Share Test-Taking Tips

Students may not like tests, but studying for them can reinforce their memory of what they've learned. Tests also help the teachers learn what the students understand, and what might still be unclear. Tests will be a common part of your child's school career.

Start now to help your elementary schooler get comfortable taking tests. Encourage your child to:

• Start with the easiest questions first, if the test format allows. Getting these right can boost confidence and grades. Your child should mark the hard questions and go back to them after answering all the easy questions.
• Look for clue words. Sometimes one word, such as always or never, will indicate the answer. Also, your child may find clues in other test questions.
• Avoid spending so much time on one question that there isn’t enough time for the rest.
• Save time to double-check work. Did your child follow all the instructions? Are the answers accurate and complete?
