Doing a little preparation will make your parent-teacher conferences more productive. Before you have a conference, have a talk with your child. Ask these questions about how your student thinks the year is going:
Listen carefully to your child's answers. Write them down and take them with you to discuss when you meet with the teacher.
When you return from the conference, tell your child what you and the teacher said about the issues your child raised. This will make it clear that you care what your child thinks. And knowing that you and the teacher are working together to help your child learn can motivate willingness to try.
