Summer Days Are Prime Learning Time
In the summer, children often don't get enough opportunities to practice skills they've learned during the school year. This can lead to a drop in performance sometimes called the "summer slide."
But this doesn't have to happen! Engaging in plenty of learning activities this summer will help your child be better prepared for school in the fall.
To help your elementary schooler retain and strengthen skills:
- Encourage journaling. Set aside a certain time each day for your child to write. You can suggest a theme, or leave the choice up to your child.
- Help your child develop keyboarding and other computer skills. If you don't have a computer at home, you may be able to sign your child up for a class at a local community center, or practice on the computers at the library.
- Experiment with water. Under your supervision, have your child use measuring cups to estimate and measure water volume. Introduce words like funnel, volume and weight. Discuss how fractions of a cup relate to the whole (there are three 1/3 cups in a cup, for example).
- Learn on the move. Whenever you go somewhere, get out a map and show your child how to follow your route. Have your child read road signs and announce speed limits as they change.
- Visit the library often. Encourage your child to select a variety of types of books (poetry, biography, hobby, mystery, etc.). Ask the librarian for advice about titles your child might enjoy.
