Adapt Along With Your Teen
Children change a lot during the teen years, both physically and emotionally. As this happens, the adults in their lives need to adjust also.
To support your maturing teen:
- Learn what's typical for teens your child's age. It's natural, for example, for teens to challenge authority more often. This helps them understand adults' views and develop their own values.
- Enforce important rules, even when your teen complains. Setting limits shows that you care. At the same time, listen to and consider student's opinions. Explain rules. Don't say, "Because I said so."
- Gradually give your teen new responsibilities. Choose responsibilities that you believe your teen can realistically handle.
- Make time when your teen wants to talk. Kids are often less open with adults at this age, so take advantage of any chances.
- Remember what it was like to be a teen. Listen to your student's feelings without lecturing or trying to solve every problem.
- Allow more privacy. Knock before entering your teen's room. At an annual medical checkup, make time for your teen to talk with the doctor alone.
