Don't Ignore Resentment About School

If your teen is upset about something that happened during school, don't ignore it.

Strong feelings often lead to stronger feelings. The problem may only get worse if you don't help your teen deal with it.

Ask your student to explain the situation. Listen, but keep an open mind. Don’t automatically take your teen’s side if you hear something like, "The teacher hates me." Ask for more details. “Can you think of any part you may have played in the situation?” Ask what your teen could do to improve things.

Then, if necessary, contact the teacher—but only when you're calm. Listen to what the teacher has to say, and report how the situation affected your teen. This type of open communication lays the foundation for working together to solve this problem—and any others that might arise.
