Celebrate Learning in May
There's more to celebrate in May than Mother's Day and Memorial Day. Here are some other holidays you and your child can celebrate this month:
- May 2-8—Be Kind to Animals Week. Help your child do something nice for your pet or learn more about what is being done to protect animals around the world.
- May 4—National Teacher Day. Teachers have worked harder than ever to meet the needs of students in changing and challenging circumstances this year. Suggest that your child write a note to a teacher who has made a difference.
- May 12—Limerick Day. May 12 is the birthday of English author Edward Lear, known for his limericks. Limericks are funny poems with a specific rhyme scheme. With your child, learn about limericks and try writing one or two. Share them with your family.
- May 16—International Day of Living Together in Peace. Established by the UN, this day promotes peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding and solidarity. Talk with your child about these values and ways that your family can demonstrate them.
- May 21—Anniversary of Lindbergh’s historic flight. On this date in 1927, Charles Lindbergh completed the first solo, non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. With your child, learn more about aviation. Check out a book from the library or go online to look at different types of planes. Plan an imaginary overseas trip you'd like to take.
