Establish Safety Rules for Going Online

Today's kids are "digital natives" who are growing up using computers and going online. The internet can be a wonderful learning tool for children. But parents have an important role to play in ensuring their child's online safety.

The FBI recommends these safety tips for families:

Supervise when your child goes online. Set rules. Don't let your child use the internet unless you are nearby to monitor or take part in the activity. Keep digital devices in a place where you can keep an eye on your child's online activity. Know the websites and apps your child uses.
Talk about your values. It's up to you to let your child know which sites, apps and online activities are off limits and why.
Warn against giving out personal information. Your child should never share identifying information such as school name, phone number or address online. Also make it clear that it is never OK to agree to meet anyone your child encounters online without you present.
Explain that people online may not be who they seem. The person who says "she" is a "12-year-old girl" could be a much older man.
