Learn More About People Who Write

To encourage an interest in writing, talk about the people who write the books your child is reading. When your student pulls out a book, ask who the author is. What information does the book provide about the author? What does your child think the author was trying to say in the book?

Then, encourage your child to:

Write to the author. If the author is alive, this can be done via letter or email to the book's publisher. Keep in mind that while some authors always respond, others cannot.
Research the author. Help your child learn about the writer's life. How does it relate to the book, if at all?
Imitate the author's style. The author probably has a writing style your child can try—humor, short sentences or a certain point of view, for example.
