Help Your Shy Teen Thrive
There's nothing wrong with being shy. But teens who are extremely shy can have problems in school.
Students need help managing shyness if they:
- Never speak up in class.
- Develop physical symptoms (such as stomachaches) when they have to be around others.
- Always avoid group projects.
- Don't socialize with peers.
- Resist taking on leadership roles.
If you're concerned about your student's shyness, here are some things you can do:
- Ask your teen which situations provoke feelings of shyness. Then try role-playing those same situations together to build comfort and confidence.
- Talk with the teachers. They may be able to help by allowing your teen to work in smaller groups or having your teen partner with outgoing students.
- Consider having your student tutor other students. This can boost confidence and give your teen practice talking with others.
- Consult a professional, especially if your teen suddenly goes from very outgoing to very shy. This can be a sign of a serious problem that needs your help right away.
