Show Your Teen That Learning is About More than Grades

Parents often ask their teens how they are doing in school. You may ask your teen how science is going. Or if English is getting any easier.

But what are you really asking? Chances are you want to know how your teen's grades are. Grades count, but it is the learning process that really matters. To make it clear that learning is about more than grades, ask about:

The books your teen is reading. What are your student's thoughts about the plots? What questions does the reading raise? What has your teen found most interesting?
Your teen's most recent test. Don't ask about the grade. Instead, ask if your student thinks the test was a good way to measure how well the class knew the material.
Learning accomplishments. For example, how did your student handle the most difficult science problem on a recent homework worksheet?
Class experiences that have changed your teen's way of thinking. You may be able to share some of your own school experiences that had a similar effect on you.

Questions like these show that you care about what your teen is thinking and learning. They also show you are concerned about your student's development. This makes it clear that learning is about far more than grades.
