Help Your Child Listen for Sounds That Make Up Words

There are lots of ways to help young children build language skills that will help them learn to read. Here are two easy ones to do often with your child:

  1. Help him listen for sounds that letters or groups of letters make. For example, the D sound in the words doll and Dad, or the TH sound in the words through and throw. What other words can he think of that include that sound?
  2. Rhyme together. Pick out a word that your child has used in a sentence. Ask "What rhymes with that?" Take turns naming a rhyming word until neither of you can think of any more.
