Map the Way to Improved Geography Skills
November 15-19 is Geography Awareness Week. It's a good time to make sure your child has practice reading maps—which are often included on tests.
Here's a fun activity that can help:
- Get a road map of the country. (Or, for younger children, a map of your state or province.) There are many online.
- Ask your child to choose a place he'd like to visit. Mark that location on the map.
- Together, try to determine the best route from your home to the place your child selected.
- Have your child use the map's scale to learn how many miles it is to your final destination. How many days might it take to drive there? Are there interesting sites to see along the way?
