Checklists Help Kids Have What They Need
Students who know how to organize find managing all the details of school much easier. Creating and using checklists will help your child build organizational skills and have everything he needs for school in the morning.
Teach your child to:
- Stop at the front door. Before he leaves for school, have him stop for a minute and ask himself, "Do I have everything I'll need today?"
- Use the "head-to-toe checklist." Before your child goes anywhere, have him run through a top-to-bottom mental checklist: "My hat's on my head. My coat's on my body. My backpack's on my back. My gloves are on my hands. My boots are on my feet."
- Write it down. Have your child make checklist of everything he needs for school on a typical day. Post it where he can check it each evening as he is organizing for the next day. He can add self-stick notes for special items—"Don't forget the permission slip for the field trip."
