Practice Math Facts Different Ways With Flash Cards

These days, even the youngest children know how to use a calculator. But it's still important that they be able to do math problems without one.

If your child is just learning math facts, or if he needs to brush up on facts taught earlier, help him make some flash cards. Ask the teacher what math facts your child should master at his grade level.

You and your child can use index cards to make flash cards. Write problems (9 x 3) on one side and answers (27) on the other. Then vary the way you use the cards.

Here are some ideas:

Have your child write or say the answer as you show him the problem.
Show him the answer and ask for the question that goes with it, like on the TV game show Jeopardy.
Remove the easy problems and spend extra time on the harder ones. Sometimes, mix them up and go through them all.
Use odd moments to practice. Work on math facts with your child while folding laundry, while you're cooking dinner together or before bedtime.
Keep the practice sessions short. End them with words of praise for successes and good effort, and your child’s math skills will be reinforced!
