Let Your Child Make Choices About How to Do Schoolwork

Giving your child some choices about how to do assignments can make study time go smoothly. Doing the work is non-negotiable, but students should be able to decide:

• Whether to do it in their rooms or at the kitchen table.
• Whether to do it right after school or after relaxing or exercising for a little while.
• Whether to do math first or start with reading.
• Whether to schedule one long homework session or two shorter ones.

Discuss these choices together and let your child decide what to do. If a choice doesn’t work out (your child plays outside until dark and then can’t get an assignment done), experiencing the consequences will make it clear that a different choice is needed next time.
