Build Your Child's Knowledge of the Environment
The more children learn about the environment and the ways that living things depend on it, the better the future will be. To promote knowledge and consideration of the environment and the planet:
- Talk with your child about how some natural resources are becoming scarce. Some plants and animals are becoming extinct. Discuss ways people can help keep this from happening.
- Help your child find out which animals are on the list of endangered species (for a United States list, visit www.fws.gov/endangered ) and what is being done to help them.
- Have your child reuse items around the house for craft projects. Explain that this cuts down on waste. Decorate grocery bags to use as gift-wrap. Cover cans (without sharp edges) with clay or colored paper to turn them into pencil holders.
- Show your child how to choose products with less packaging when you are shopping. Look for containers that can be recycled or reused.
- Have your child help you recycle. Your child can sort plastic, paper and cans for recycle bins.
- Plant a tree together in the spring. Do this in your backyard or as part of a local program in your town. Or ask your child's teacher if the class could plant a tree on school grounds.
