Children Open Up When Parents Are Honest, Available

It's important for families to talk with children about tough issues. But how can you get your child to open up to you about worries or challenges?

Tell your child that you will always answer questions. Then, when your student asks you something, tell the truth—but don't feel you have to tell all the truth, particularly if it would be overwhelming. Supply as much information as your child needs. If you don't know the answer, you might say, "What a good question. Let's find the answer together."

You may not always be able to answer your child's questions right away. In those situations, say something like, "I really want to answer that question. Let's talk about it tonight after we eat." Then make sure to follow through.
