Simple Strategies Improve Success With Assignments
Some children have more trouble concentrating than others. It's hard for them to sit still for long and focus. They get distracted. They stray off task.
This can make it very difficult for them to do schoolwork. They might need more help with assignments than other kids.
If this is true for your child, here are some things that can help:
- Create a quiet space for your student to study and do schoolwork. Turn off screen media and other distractions.
- Break up the time. Have your child work for 20 minutes, then take a five minute break.
- Help your student divide large tasks into smaller ones that are more manageable.
- Encourage your student to make daily to-do lists. Kids enjoy checking off each task as they do them.
- Encourage organization. Keep school supplies in one place. Give your child a notebook or calendar for writing down assignments.
- Set a specific, regular time for doing schoolwork. It could be shortly after school or after dinner, or whenever your child is most alert.
- Establish a schoolwork routine. For instance, your child could do the hardest task first, then do some practice work and finish up by studying. See what works best for your student.
- Set a timer to help your child keep track of time.
- Consult the teacher if your child can't do assignments.
