Get Organized for Easier Mornings
"Mom, I can't find my math book!" "I don't have my lunch packed and the bus is coming in one minute!"
Sound familiar? For many kids, just getting out the door in the morning with everything they need is a real challenge. You can foster success at school by helping your child get organized at home. Here's how to tackle three problem areas:
- Time management. Some kids put everything off until the last minute. You can help your child by blocking out regular times for study, play and other activities. Use a large calendar. Write down all of your child's activities. Then set a time for studying and doing assignments. Try to stick to the same time each day. Your child will know that flopping in front of the TV after school isn't OK because it's study time until 5:00 p.m.
- School belongings. End those morning hide-and-seek games. Get a big box and put it in a place where your child can't miss it. Items from school go in the box as soon as your student gets home. Completed assignments go back in the box, too. So do library books, and anything that has to go back to school.
- Evenings. The smoothest mornings start the night before. Have your child choose and lay out clothes for the next day. Pack a lunch and put it in the refrigerator. Items from your child's "school belongings" box go back in the backpack. Then observe a regular bedtime that allows your child to get enough sleep to wake alert and ready to go in the morning.
