Make the Most of Bedtime Reading
If you're like most parents, finding time to read with your child can sometimes be a challenge. But with a little planning, you can make reading to your child at bedtime one of the best parts of your day.
Here's how:
- Plan ahead. Make a weekly trip to the library. Choose five books for the week. Set them near your child's bed. Each day, say, "We'll read this book tonight. Tomorrow, we'll pick another book." This makes it clear that reading is an important part of your day, too.
- Talk about books. At breakfast, discuss the book you read the night before with your child. Remembering the story is an important reading skill.
- Make up a story. If you are too tired to hold a book, make up a story instead. Or tell a story you remember.
- Use books to teach your child about time. Look through the books for the coming week. With a sticky note, mark whether the books are short, medium or long. Then tell your child, "Tonight we have plenty of time. Choose a long book."
