Help Your Child Build Reading Comprehension Skills
If you notice that your child is having trouble understanding reading material, try these tips for improving comprehension. When you read together:
- Stop every now and then. Ask your child questions about the material. “Why do you think the character did that?”
- Help your child make connections between things that are happening in the reading and familiar experiences or ideas. "Billy's favorite food is pancakes—just like yours!"
- Have your child act out the story after you’ve read it. This is a good way for you both to see what your child understands and to reinforce the material.
