Address Negative Feelings About School

If your child is upset about something that happened at school, don’t ignore it.

Anger often leads to more anger. So, the problem will likely get worse if you don’t deal with it.

Ask your child to explain the situation. If you hear something like, “The teacher hates me,” listen, but don’t automatically side with your child. Instead, ask your student to give you details and examples. If needed, contact the teacher—but only when you’re calm. Listen to what the teacher has to say, and explain how the situation is affecting your child.

This type of open communication between you, your child and the teacher will lay the foundation for working together to solve this problem—and any others that might arise.
