Use Your Child’s Report Card to Increase Communication

Report cards provide useful information. And whether your child’s report card is great or shows a need for some improvement, you can use it as a way to increase two-way communication with the school.

Start by using the report card for some two-way communication with your child. Ask about the grades. Were there any that surprised your student? Which grade makes your child the proudest? What does your child want to do during the next marking period to improve? (Even students who earn an A should set goals for improvement.)

If you have questions about the report card, get in touch with your child’s teacher. Why did your child get that low grade in math? Are there things you could be doing at home to help? If your child is excelling, ask what you and the teacher can do to help your child stretch a little more.

You may want to ask for a parent-teacher conference. Or, you may be able to get the answers you need with a call or an email to the teacher. But to find out more about your child's learning, don’t pass up this chance for some two-way communication with the school.
