Put Family Members Into Your Child’s Bedtime Stories

Telling stories at bedtime is a great way to get close and help your child build vocabulary and wind down at the end of the day. But it’s not always easy to think of new story ideas.

In your stories, make the characters’ names rhyme with names of people in your family. Then the characters can relive the events in your family members’ lives and look forward to the next day’s activities.

The characters can also reinforce good behavior. For example, they might be careful to say please and thank you. Sometimes they might see the effects their poor behavior has on others.

You can also use bedtime stories to help you set high expectations. If the family is planning an activity for the next day, for example, the characters can make their parents happy by getting ready on time and not fighting.
