Talk to Your Child About Plagiarism

Does your child know what it means to plagiarize information?

Plagiarism is copying words or original ideas directly from another source. This is especially easy for children to do unintentionally if they are doing research online.

Explain to your child that copying word for word is cheating. Many teachers give a project a failing grade if they find a child has plagiarized.

To help your child avoid plagiarizing, explain that writers should put the information from the source into their own words. If your student does want to use a sentence from another source, explain that it should go in quotation marks and your child must give credit to the author.

Ask your child's teacher for guidelines to help your child avoid plagiarizing when doing research projects for school.
