Promote Civility and Eliminate Name-Calling

Children have called each other names for centuries. They put someone down in front of a crowd because they hear others do it, to look cool to onlookers, to feel better about themselves, or for reasons known only to themselves.

Whatever the reason, name-calling is wrong. And it's wrong to think that name-calling is just another part of growing up. These actions are linked to much harsher cruelties. And persistent name-calling and name-calling with an intent to hurt or isolate are forms of bullying.

In order to have a safe and productive learning environment, it's important to limit aggressive behavior. Families can help by talking about better ways to interact with others, and by establishing rules for interactions at home.
