Take Steps Now to Prevent Substance Abuse
Families don’t always think about the need to teach elementary school children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. But several actions you can take now are important ways to help prevent these problems.
Make it a point to:
- Establish family rules about drug and alcohol use. Make sure your elementary schooler knows the rules. Talk about the dangers of tobacco use, including vaping and chewing. Make sure your child knows the consequences for breaking your rules.
- Help your child establish personal goals. Having goals gives kids a reason to avoid behaviors that would sabotage those goals. Your child's goals should be both short-term ("I want to finish reading all the books in my favorite series") and long-term ("I want to be a doctor").
- Know your child's friends. Spend time with them. Know the families of your child's friends, too.
- Help your child discover strengths and feel good about achievements. Get excited about things your child cares about.
- Keep an eye on your child. Ask questions about activities. Know where your child is at all times—and with whom.
