Listen, Then Let Your Child Decide

Your child needs to make a big decision—so big that you're tempted to step in and make it. But there's something else you should do first: listen. Your child may come to the right conclusion without help and gain important problem-solving skills.

To encourage your elementary schooler to think things through:

  1. Reflect. Rephrase what you hear your child saying. "So you're embarrassed about not scoring any goals, and you're worried about trying again."
  2. Ask thought-provoking questions. For example, "If you don't go to practice, how will you feel later? How might your teammates feel?"
  3. Be patient. Pay close attention and take your child's ideas seriously. If you must offer alternatives, do so with respect for what your student has said. Then, let your child choose among the acceptable options.
