Respect for Others Improves Learning Conditions for All

A healthy respect for other people is an important ingredient in a productive learning environment.

Teach your child that common courtesies, like saying "thank you" and "excuse me," are said out of respect for the other person. Being honest with other people—not deceiving, cheating or stealing from them—is another way of respecting them. Listening to other people's views and accepting their differences are also parts of respectful behavior.

TV and videos can be a useful tool for teaching your child about respect. When you watch a show with your child, talk about the behavior you see. Are the characters being respectful? What would your child do in the same situation?

Treat your child with courtesy, and demonstrate that you place a high value on respecting others. Then praise your child for showing courteous and respectful behavior.
