School Counselors Are Ready to Help
School counselors are trained to help kids manage struggles and make progress in school. Here are just a few of the things you can talk to your child’s school counselor about:
- Concerns about schoolwork or school access. Counselors can check with the principal and teachers, assist with extra help and even set up parent-teacher meetings.
- Worries about social issues. From disease, bullying, divorce and death to the little squabble with a classmate or sibling—counselors can guide children and families to resources and solutions.
- Limitations or strengths. Counselors can spot learning difficulties children may be having, and help arrange for evaluations and assessments. They are also responsible for much of the testing and coding of children for special education services.
- Thoughts about strengths and interests. Counselors work on student career interests as early as elementary school with career days and interest assessments.
