Take Action to Stop Bullying
Bullying can damage children physically and emotionally. It can also affect their interest and performance in school.
If your elementary schooler is being picked on by someone at school, there are ways you can help. Here’s how:
- Say that what is happening is not your child's fault and that you will help.
- Offer ideas your child can use to address the problem. Some bullies thrive on getting their target’s attention, so suggest that your child ignore the tormentor. If your student is being teased or taunted, simply walking away may stop it.
- Monitor the situation. Bullying incidents often resolve themselves, but it’s still crucial to keep an eye on what’s happening. Ask if your child is still being bothered, and also keep an eye on schoolwork. Even if your child is reluctant to discuss it, the stress of what’s going on may be reflected in schoolwork quality.
- Take action if needed. If the bullying persists, or if you sense that the situation is getting worse, you must intervene. Talk to the school principal or counselor and work together to resolve the issue.
