Teachers have found that talking with students about the good things they do is one of the best ways to foster self-discipline.
Informal talks—anytime except when your child has misbehaved—will work at home, too. Dinnertime is a perfect opportunity. Work—and talk—together in the kitchen before the meal. Linger at the table, then clean up together. Thank your child for contributing ideas and conversation as well as for pitching in with the dishes.
You can also follow bedside story time with a chat. When the lights are out, even children who are non-communicative by day may open up. Offering praise for positive behavior will reinforce it in your child’s mind during sleep.
