Past Progress Inspires Future Success

Is your child less than motivated to do well in school? To foster a desire to succeed in school, point out how much your child has already accomplished.

Here are two ways to help your child recognize progress:

  1. Look at the calendar. Flip to last month and say, “Remember how worried you were about that science test? You didn’t think you’d pass, but you did.” Then, spend a moment talking about how hard your child studied and how that effort paid off.
  2. Look through past schoolwork. If your child is baffled by fractions, for example, pull out some old math worksheets. “At first, you really struggled with long division, but then you practiced and got the hang of it. You could do that with fractions, too.”
