Good Sports Make Sports Good
Sports are a great way for kids to make friends, get exercise and have fun. They also offer an opportunity for children to learn how to be a good sport. But sometimes, pressure from families to win gets in the way.
To help your child learn how to be a good sport:
- Remember that "Fun is Number One." If everyone is having fun, both winning and losing seem less important.
- Make sure your child knows the rules … and plays by them.
- Be a good sport yourself. Cheer for the whole team, not just your child. Don’t argue with the coach or the referee. Treat opponents with respect.
- Watch for times when you can talk about being a good sport. "I know it seemed like the ref ignored that foul. But that happens to both sides sometimes. I was proud of the way you just kept playing."
- Don't put too much pressure on your child to win. Try to find at least one positive thing to say after every game.
- Don't allow gloating or pouting. Teach your child to be a gracious winner and a polite loser. (In life, most children will be both of these … many times).
- Be realistic. Most kids will not make the Olympics or the professional leagues. But every child can enjoy playing a sport.
