Acknowledge Feelings Without Giving In

Successful students take responsibility for doing what's expected of them. Along the way, however, they often argue about it. One way to end arguments is by acknowledging your child's feelings. Sometimes, all a child wants is to be heard before going off to do what's expected.

For example, if your child says, "I don't want to do my reading," you might respond with, "Wouldn't it be nice if we never had to do things we don't want to?" You might even spend a minute talking about what you would do if you could do anything you wanted.

Then, get back to reality. "But we can't ignore the things we must do. I have to make dinner, and you have to finish reading that chapter."
